Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Ability to communicate orally and in writing

I have taken two speech intensive courses in the political science department and I am called upon frequently to brief material in ROTC. I have given military intelligence briefings in my National Guard unit for training scenarios and battle analysis. My work as a tutor offers me the opportunity to practice my oral communication skills, however, I took the job to sharpen my interpersonal skills rather than to improve my communication. I believe my work as a tutor helps me to practice elicitation techniques I use as an interrogator. I have written a great deal of research papers during my four years in college. My professors for English and History were impressed with my work and both requested copies of my research papers for their classes in order to use them for grammar and format examples. The papers I have written for political science have been more in depth and require more statistical information.

  • Ability to collect and analyze
  • open source information. The two papers written for State & Local Government dealt with two very volatile public policy issues (flag desecration and capital punishment). Our class was tasked to find up to date information on public interest groups that supported or were opposed to these issues. We analyzed this information and determined the relative strength of these groups by looking at annual budget, membership, and the availability of their literature. For International Politics & Foreign Policy I wrote a paper on the status of the Democratic Republic of Congo after the recent overthrow of the government of the former Zaire. This paper dealt with the political setting in the former Zaire (ie. history and demographics), the patterns of rule in the region (ie. modern authoritarianism), and the problems the new regime faces since the war. The school library has provided a great deal of current sources, but the internet has been one of my most powerful tools when searching for open source information.

  • Skill in writing and editing
  • I have had experience writing in both the active and passive voice. The ROTC program has taught me a great deal about the active voice used in Army writing. I received a refresher course at the U.S. Army Intelligence Center when being trained how to write investigative reports on electronic message forms. My creative writing for core curriculum classes such as English and History have been exclusively in the passive voice. I use a standard five paragraph format for creative writing. I adhere closely to the standards whether writing creatively or professionally and I recognize grammatical errors and other errors that keep me from getting my point across.

  • Ability to use word processing and spreadsheet software to prepare documents
  • I am competent and experienced in the following software and online technology based on my course work in college and my training at the U.S. Army Intelligence Center.

Microsoft Word for Windows, Microsoft Powerpoint, Microsoft Excel, HTML: Hot Dog Editor, CD-ROM and Internet
